This hands-on creative workshop invites you to breathe life back into fabric scraps by designing your own personalised textile brooches.
You will learn how to work with a variety of reclaimed, vintage and recycled fabrics and decorative materials such as ribbons and buttons to create a unique wearable brooch with guidance and support from artist facilitator Caroline Ip, in collaboration with Assemblage Collective.
Designed by students on Central Saint Martin’s BA in Culture, Criticism and Curation, Material Memories is inspired by the Foundling Museum’s collection of fabric tokens, which will be explored during the workshop.
You don’t need any previous art experience to join this workshop and it is open to anyone aged 18-30. It will last for 2 hours.
If you want to explore your creativity at your own pace, work with fabric to create something personal and practical, and learn something new, then this workshop is for you!
You will receive:
- All the materials you need to create your brooch
- Step by step guidance
- New insight and perspectives
Please bring:
A small piece of scrap or salvaged material of your choice. We will provide plenty of other materials for you to work with.

Caroline Ip is an artist and facilitator based in London, whose practice brings together interests in diasporic culture, storytelling, and archives, considering the processes through which our identities are constructed and contested.
Drawn to hand-sewing, perhaps in part due to ancestral connections to the textiles industries in Lancashire and China, this technique has become a medium through which Caroline explores her own mixed heritage and nurtures collective dialogue in community spaces. Her process centres a tactile relationship with materials, utilising recycled and second-hand fabrics alongside found objects and ephemera, with a curiosity into the role of sensory memory in shaping our cultural identities.
Assemblage Collective is an art collective based in London specialising in hands-on creative workshops with an emphasis on experimentation and collaboration. Assemblage is currently in residence at the Foundling Museum in London where they host 10 workshops a year for young people aged 18-30, as well as offering a range of other events open to all at different venues across London.
