Late 19th-century London was an unhealthy place, plagued by epidemics of infectious disease and appalling smog.
In this talk, Professor Eric Schneider explores how the Foundling Hospital provided medical care to the children in its charge, and what the records of the Foundling Hospital can tell us about the children’s health. By tracing individual children from their birth to their discharge from the Hospital, there is much we can learn about their experiences and the causes of ill health in the past.
Eric Schneider is Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His work explores how child health has changed over time by constructing data from archival sources, including an immensely detailed dataset on the health of children at the Foundling Hospital at the turn of the 20th century.
