Relax with a glass of wine and enjoy making personalised ceramic tiles and unique tokens of your own under the guidance of artist, Martha Todd.
Inspired by the intricate designs from the Museum’s token collection, you will learn introductory techniques to create handmade ceramic pieces with the opportunity to engrave designs personal to you. This intimate workshop will begin with an after-hours tour of the Museum’s 18th-century tokens collection and their touching history.
This event is held as part of the Bloomsbury Festival. The theme of this year’s festival is Human.Kind, a term which could be explored either in its entirety, or focusing on either word. Focusing on humanity, The Foundling Museum highlights the tokens in its collection. The tokens ranged from highly ornate or embroidered pieces to small possessions, like thimbles or bottle caps. Tokens tell us a lot about the parent’s identity and circumstances to give up their children: some were only able to give a torn piece of their own skirt, or a found object. They hold myriad personal stories, most of which we can only guess at.

Please note: All ceramics will be glazed and fired in a kiln off-site. We will invite you to return to the Museum around 2 weeks later to collect your object, when you will be able view our new exhibition Self-Made.
About the artist
Martha Todd is a London-based ceramic artist who runs her own studio in North London. She completed her BA from the Royal College of Art in 2010 and is currently completing her PhD by practice at the University of the Creative Arts. Martha runs regular workshops at her studio – Studio1Ceramics – at Florentia Clothing Village in Haringey and has delivered workshops in museums around London since 2016.
