Upon being admitted to the Foundling Hospital, children would be placed with a wet or dry nurse in the countryside. These nurses would be responsible for their care until they were old enough to return to institutional care at the Hospital, usually around the age of four.
Through photographs, letters, and objects from the Museum’s archive this display explores how these caretakers may be considered the original foster families of the Foundlings, and how they provided their first and formative experiences of family, love, and belonging.
This display is free with the price of admission.
