James Tavares is a young and exciting chamber and orchestral musician. Originally from Scotland, James has performed all over Europe as a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra; he has performed in iconic venues such as the Musikverein in Vienna and La Scalla in Milan. James is currently on trial for Principal Tuba at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Outside the orchestra, James has a passion for chamber music and can often be heard performing with his Brass Quintet, London Central Brass. As a member of this group, he recently won the Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition 2023 as well as the Musicians Company Brass Ensemble Prize 2023. James is generously supported by The Musicians Company, Countess of Munster Trust and Help Musicians UK as he continues his studies at the Royal Academy of Music as a Masters Student.

For the last two years, the Foundling Museum has partnered with the Philharmonia Orchestra to provide monthly recital opportunities for their MMSF Instrumental Fellows. The scheme has been developed to equip musicians at the start of their careers with real-world performance experience, whilst inviting them to engage with our history and collections through their programming.

The Philharmonia MMSF Instrumental Fellowship Programme (formerly the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund) has supported young musicians since 1968. Over the years, the programme has helped to prepare exceptionally talented instrumental students for a professional orchestral career. From mentoring with a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra to recital opportunities and training workshops, the Fellowship is an extensive programme that aims to develop emerging artists in a supportive and nurturing environment.
